Reviews

"All of us who believe in the democratic mission of higher education have been waiting for a book like this for a long, long time. The Engaged Campus thoughtfully and powerfully ushers in the next essential wave of research, scholarship, and practice in community engagement. Tying a brilliant historical account of the theoretical and practical roots of the community engagement movement to reports from key program leaders, critics, and higher education scholars, this book offers refreshing conceptual clarity. The Engaged Campus will undoubtedly be a required companion for all higher education professionals and scholars who hope their twenty-first century institutions will prepare students to be not only workers and wage-earners but also stewards of our democracy." - Joel Westheimer, University Research Chair in Education and Democracy at the University of Ottawa; Founder and Executive Director, Democratic Dialogue (www.DemocraticDialogue.com)

"For anyone who thinks service learning and community engagement are no longer relevant in today's era of Occupy Wall Street and Citizens United, anyone who assumes that college campuses have gone moribund, pick up The Engaged Campus and think again. Dan W. Butin and Scott Seider have assembled a battery of engaged scholars to help them report on the latest developments in service and higher education. The result is a must-read for everyone who cares about democratic citizenship, from college students and university faculty to community organizers and civic NGO leaders." - Benjamin R. Barber, Distinguished Senior Fellow, DEMOS; Founder and President, Interdependence Movement (CivWorld at DEMOS); Walt Whitman Professor Emeritus, Rutgers University

"Acutely aware of the critical crossroads at which the engaged campus has arrived, Dan W. Butin and Scott Seider urge us to move beyond the community engagement movement into a deeper, more systematic and disciplined endeavor. Their edited collection of essays details an intellectual movement based in authentic, sustained partnerships with the community that benefit both the community and the academy while building new curricular opportunities for students and a highly rigorous field of study. For all who seek to envision and fashion the engaged campus of the twenty-first century, this new collection of essays edited by Butin and Seider will prove to be highly instructive and a invaluable resource." - Katie Flowers, assistant director of the Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning, Hobart and William Smith Colleges
